BIOGRAPHY

Born in France in 1974, Flo Mounier moved to Chicago 7 years later, where at the age of 13 the ground work was laid and his drumming career started with drum teacher Tony Castelli. A year later, and now in Montreal, he continued to gather ammunition and to develop his skills. His hard work paid off as he soon became one of the most recognized drummers within the metal scene. Drummer for the band Cryptopsy (formerly known as Necrosis), he has toured Canada, Europe, Japan, and the United States as a headlining act over the last 3 years, and combined record sales have reached over 145,000 copies to date. Flo also plays for local Montrealer Rémy Langlois, who's album ‘Echo’ is making waves in the Rock Québécois scene. Wherever Flo has played, his reputation remains the same; he combines great chops with blistering speed and technical brutality. Add this to an open mind approach that embraces different musical genres, and Flo has developed an even greater ability to enhance the creative edge within his unique phrasing.

Having studied with the likes of Magella Cormier and now part time teacher Bruno Roy, his exploration of the Latin / Jazz approach has added an originality to his style which sets him apart from the rest. Flo's speed and precision apply to his live performances as well, and his playing continues to get even faster and tighter. His delivery and execution of complex fills at abnormal speeds will leave no one feeling indifferent.

Flo's style is the example to follow for the new generation of drummers who wish to find out more on what the discipline of extreme drumming is all about.

On August 22nd in Melbourne, Cryptopsy will headline the first international metal festival to be held in Australia. Also on the bill, the European bands Doro, Sodom and Marduk will be part of this event called Destruction Of Oz. For Cryptopsy, this trip to Australia means they are now attacking a fourth continent after playing North America, Europe and Asia.

Flo Mounier performed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, on March 30 and 31.

Flo Mounier was invited by Matthew Barney, an American artist who from his earliest work has explored the transcendence of physical limitations in a multimedia art practice that includes feature-length films, video installations, sculpture, photography, and drawing.

Matthew Barney and the composer Jonathan Bepler put together two performances at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Other participants were Will Rhamer the vocalist for Mortician and Derek Roddy the drummer for Hate Eternal.

The performances at the Guggenheim featured the five-cycle film project “The Cremaster Cycle.

NONE SO LIVE - CD

Reviewed by Metal Militia (6/17/03):
Oh my, the death metal behemoth Cryptopsy keeps pillaging ears wherever it goes. This is truly a monster of a live album showcasing everything that makes Cryptopsy a first class death metal group. First of all the new singer, Martin LaCroix, does an admirable job. No he's not Lord Worm, but he can do some of Worm's vocal tricks, and he is a huge improvement on DiSalvo's material. Second of all the track selection is impeccable. Showcasing the best material from Cryptopsy's entire catalogue, each track is an exercise in perfection. Musically tight, some of the tracks are played at almost twice the speed of their studio recordings. The musicianship is simply breathtaking.

Of course the drumming is absolutely phenomenal, to hear a song like "We Bleed" in the live setting and have it sound better than the recorded version just blows my mind. There is no doubt that Flo Mournier is the best drummer in the metal world. Everything the man does is simply incredible. In fact one of the highlights of the album is his seven-minute drum solo. Amazing.

My personal favorite tracks on the album originally come from None So Vile which also happens to be one of my top death metal albums of all time. "Phobophile" and "Slit Your Guts" are relentless, the aural equivalent of a stampeding herd of elephants, reducing everything in its way to dust. Both tracks are faster and even more brutal than their studio counterparts and the live setting creates a great atmosphere.

The bottom line: if you love death metal get this album. One of the best live albums I've heard.

MODERN DRUMMER - Review by : Jeff Perlah

None So Live: Montreal 2002

RATING: 8

Most extreme-metal live albums sound as if they were recorded on a cruddy microcassette machine. Yet Cryptopsy’s pulverizing presentation comes across loud and clear here, while the quintet perform in a tight and dynamic way. So feast your ears on the drumming of FLO MOUNIER, whose whirlwind style is arguably the most essential aspect of this Montreal band’s unpredictable death-metal/grindcore. Mounier plays like he’s got eight limbs. But rather than sounding too chaotic (the metal/grindcore drummer’s curse), his signature changes and various complexities are usually artful and in control. Extreme-metal drumming at its finest.
